March 4th is GRAMMAR DAY Lets Speak Bostonian

GETTING YOUR BEARINGS:

-Massachusetts is south of New Hamshuh (New Hampshire). When New Hampshirites refer to their southern neighbors as “Taxachusetts”, “Flatlanders” or “Massholes”; their intent is not to be complimentary- but that’s because they’re secretly envious and want to be just like Massachusetts

  • Step 2

    A native delicacy: buddaida chips.

    A native delicacy: buddaida chips.

    LOCALITIES:

MEFFA- (Medford) – known for its fine pizza establishments and hair salons. *

PEEB’DEE- (Peabody) – whitewater rafting opportunities abound through the streets of downtown when there’s a heavy rain. *

DAHCHESTA- (Dorchester)- main thoroughfare is Dot Ave. *

AHLINGTON – (Arlington) famous for its Patriots’ Day Parade and bent out of shape for not getting as much attention as neighbors Concord and Lexington. *

WUSSTAH – (Worcester) not quite the center of the state. Anything west of it is Indian country and might as well be Noo Yokk. *

KWINZEE- (Quincy) Seashore town just south of Boston. *

RUHVEAH- (Revere) Seashore town just north of Boston. *

WOOBUN – (Woburn) Northwestern suburb. Known until recently for its chemically enhanced water supply. *

  • Step 3

Tonic: in Mass. it's used to drink, not on the hair.

    CUISINE:

BAHSTUN CREAM PIE – (Boston cream pie) chocolatey good, but more of a cake; really. *

BANEAHNA- (banana) Now THERE’S a cream pie! *

    BUDDAIDA – (potato). *

CHIPS – (potato chips); buddaida optional. *

TONIC – (soda). Don’t know the entymology of this one. Strange, yes; but except for on “Leave it to Beaver” I never heard soda called “pop” until I visited Alaska. *

FRAPPE: (milkshake). One time, a cousin from New York and I visited a local Friendly’s and my cousin asked for a milkshake,. The perplexed Irish waitress asked, “Would ya be havin’ a shaken up milk then?” Rhode Island, more or less the “kid brother” to Mass., calls ‘em “cabinets”. *

BROWN EGGS – just what it says – Dr. Seuss’ green eggs have nothing on the Bay State!

  • Step 4

    Cholly Cod.

    MISCELLANEOUS:

    YEEAS – yes *

HAYUH – hair as in, “The girls in Ruhveah all have big hayah.” *

SPA – not a health resort, rather an independently operated convenience store; a good source for tonic and buddaida chips.

EVACUATION DAY – Officially a March 17 state holiday celebrating a Revolutionary War Brit retreat, but in reality an excuse for the Irish American politicians who used to run the state to get drunk on St. Patrick’s Day. *

PATRIOT’S DAY – Celebrated only in Mass. and Maine (which was considered part of Mass. in colonial days) to commemorate Paul Ruhveah (Revere) and other patriots. *

    DON’T: do, as in “So don’t I!” *

PACKY: package store; purveyor of liquours. *

    ELASTICS: Rubber bands. *

THE T: Boston’s Subway system for which you will need a CHOLLY COD (Charlie Card); not to be confused with CAPE Cod; a Mass. vacation spot where it’s warm enough to swim outside 2 or 3 weeks of the year. *

WICKED (sometimes accompanied by pissa): excessively so; as in “These buddaida chips go wicked pissa good with tonic on the T to Havahd.”
