If imitation is the ultimate form of flattery, then Madonna must enjoy real pleasure in watching Lady Gaga from afar, because the original Queen of Pop said in a recent interview that the “Born This Way” singer reminds her of herself.
During a taping for The Graham Norton show in which the aging singer revealed her new album name, Madonna also answered questions about recording artist Lady Gaga.
Madonna said on Wednesday, “When I first saw her I was really impressed by her and she was cool. She did remind me of me back in the day,” and then added, “I do think she is very talented.”
Madonna, whose real name is Madonna Louise Ciccone, also took part in an ABC News interview which will air on the 20/20 program tonight at 10pm.
She was asked to weigh in on the “Express Yourself”/”Born This Way” controversy – two songs that are 21 years apart with striking similarities. One might even classify Gaga’s version as “copying.”
See for yourself…
Madonna, “Express Yourself”
Lady Gaga, “Born This Way”
During the ABC News interview, Madonna told reporter Cynthia McFadden that “It [‘Born This Way’] felt reductive” but said previously, “I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done.”
What do you think?
Be sure to tune in to 20/20 tonight at 10pm E.T. for the Madonna interview in its entirety.
