When Madonna agreed to be joined by British pop star M.I.A. for her Super Bowl Halftime show performance, she wasn’t expecting one obscene gesture to cause outrage and take all the focus off the performances themselves. Now the singer is understandably upset about the stunt.

A source close to Madonna told The Sun in the U.K. that she had no idea M.I.A. would raise her middle finger directly to the camera during the performance, adding that she “prides herself on professionalism.”

The source added that the singer “wanted to put on a world-beating performance. But everyone ended up talking about this girl’s middle finger.”

Ten years after Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” completely overshadowed that year’s Halftime show, M.I.A.’s middle finger stunt dominates coverage of what was otherwise a spectacularly entertaining medley between Madonna and others.

Safe to say those two will not be working with each other in the future.
