Today marks the 38th anniversary of the day Columbia Records released the classic hit Billy Joel ballad “Piano Man” in the U.S. It would be over a decade until the song got its own music video in 1985.

“Piano Man” is considered Billy Joel’s signature song, and for good reason.

There’s no more instantly recognizable hook (“Sing us a song, you’re the piano man!”) and no more appropriate song title for him as a musician.
