Robert Sherman, the Academy Award-winning songwriter behind such iconic masterpieces such as Disney’s “It’s A Small World (After All),” Mary Poppins“Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, has passed away in London at the age of 86.

Sherman has penned some of the most cherished film compositions that were admired by children and adults alike. In remembrance of his music legacy, we’re taking a look back on some of his most beloved songs featured in films.

Sherman’s son, Jeff, announced the sad news to fans via Facebook, writing:

“I have very sad news to convey. My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.”

Sherman began working at Walt Disney Studios along with his brother, Richard, after returning home from fighting in WWII. With his brother, Sherman wrote the classic “It’s A Small World (After All)” together they won two Oscars for their music from Mary Poppins.

The Sherman brothers also wrote the music for such children film classics like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, Charlotte’s Web, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and both versions of The Parent Trap. In all, Sherman was nominated for a total of nine Academy Awards during his prolific career.
