Today, I take a look at song that took nearly three years to record.

Steve Miller says he worked on “Fly Like An Eagle” for years before finally getting it the way he wanted it. He admitted that he recorded it five times before releasing it. It wasn’t until using an inexpensive Roland synthesizer that gave him the effects on the song that made it work the way he wanted it to work.

Fly Like An Eagle peaked at number two on the Billboard charts in March of 1977.

When he plays the song live on stage, it runs about 12 minutes, “…We have always built our recordings so they have room for spontaneity,” says Miller. The song begins with a 1:14 instrumental section called “Space Intro” on the original 1976 album, which made the whole piece two separate tracks.
