Chaka Kahn: Behind The Hits

Today, a song written by Prince.

I Feel For You by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chaka Kahn[/lastfm]  was written by Prince and appeared on his second album, but it is Chaka’s version that we know the best. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chaka Khan[/lastfm] was a big Prince fan and had been thinking about recording it.

It is the title track from her third album as a solo artist. She was previously with the band Rufus.

Interestingly, when Chaka recorded the song, she had no idea the finished track would contain rap and she hated it when her producer played it for her. The rap is performed by Melle Mel, who was the rapper for the group Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five.

The harmonica on I Feel For You is performed by Stevie Wonder, who had previously written Tell Me Something Good for her group Rufus, who had changed their name to Rufus featuring Chaka Kahn after she had joined them.  Stevie recorded his track on the same day he attended Marvin Gaye’s funeral.

The Pointer Sisters also covered the song on their 1982 album So Excited.

Her performance on the 27th Grammy Awards.
