For the 53-year-old singer, the sense of smell is particularly important to her.
Specifically, she believes that her own sense of smell helps her to remember her late mother, who died at age 30 in 1963 when young Madge was only 5 years old.
“My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume. I carry it with me everywhere. She always smelled like gardenias and tuberose,” Madonna said in a statement.
The pop singer called the combination “honest and yet daring” and the name of her new fragrance, Truth or Dare, was born.
As you might already know, the sense of smell is one of the most important human traits in relation to retaining memory.
So when Madonna says that “It [smell] connects us to memory, nostalgia, and the ability to dream and fantasize,” these claims are actually backed up scientifically.
In studies done around the world, scientists agree that the power of smell outweighs the power of auditory and visual learning, comparatively.
Madonna’s creating this new fragrance to connect with her mother, calling it “personal” and “an expression of me.”
So in a way, for those of you who go out and purchase Truth or Dare when it hits shelves next month at Macy’s, a tiny piece of the late Madonna Louise Ciccone will be packaged neatly in every white bottle.
Truly a special tribute to mom.
