How important was Eddie Murphy to Saturday Night Live?

He is credited for revitalizing SNL in the 80’s when the show was in a creative slump.¬†Murphy’s talent may have even saved the show from being cancelled.

Beverly Hills Cop brought him from TV to the movies in 1984, and he had a hit song written by Rick James.
