Monday is Patriots’ Day, which means athletes from all over the world will flock to Hopkinton to begin their 26-mile trek through 8 Massachusetts cities and towns, finishing at Copley Square in Boston for the 116th Annual Boston Marathon.
Although iPods and other MP3 devices are forbidden in most road races, what would the runners be listening to if that weren’t the case? Check out our Top 10 Running Songs For Marathon Monday and find out!
10. Joe Esposito, “You’re The Best Around” (Karate Kid Soundtrack)
Any song that constantly tells you “You’re The Best Around” is a great confidence-booster – not only for runners and athletes, but for anyone in general.
If a song can help Daniel LaRusso defeat Johnny from the mighty Cobra Kai dojo, then it’s probably worth listening to during a marathon!
9. Survivor, “Eye Of The Tiger”
This one’s a no-brainer. Having the “eye of the tiger” means possessing the determination and confidence to finish a 26-mile race.
For anyone that uses an iPod to workout, there’s a 90% chance that this song is in there…and listened to very frequently!
8. Paul Engemann, “Push It To The Limit”
I know what you’re thinking. “All you’re doing is picking the theme songs from popular 1980’s movies.” (Karate Kid, Rocky III and Scarface, respectively). However, that’s not the case! (see rest of list)
“Push It To The Limit” means going that extra mile, pushing yourself harder than ever before. For first-time marathon runners, this is a must listen!
7. Aerosmith & Run-DMC, “Walk This Way”
Although this song instructs you to “Walk This Way” (which is perfectly fine for novice marathon runners), “Run This Way” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
It’s the Boston Marathon, so it just wouldn’t be right to exclude Aerosmith from the list. “Walk This Way” comes in at #7!
6. Bon Jovi, “Livin’ On A Prayer”
“Woaah you’re halfway there!” That type of positive reinforcement is JUST the thing one would need halfway through a marathon! Put this track on at mile 13 and you’ll definitely have the ability to finish it out!
5. Europe, “The Final Countdown”
Don’t stop now! You’re almost there! It’s “The Final Countdown” and you’re making great time!
You just climbed “Heartbreak Hill,” the last of the 4 “Newton Hills,” and there’s only 5 miles to go…time to ramp it up!
4. Queen, “We Will Rock You”
If the last song couldn’t get you going, throw this one on! If all else fails, there’s still 3 more songs to help you finish the race.
3. Scorpions, “Rock You Like A Hurricane”
“Rock You Like A Hurricane” is common in many sporting settings and is the unofficial song for a number of teams.
This 1984 power anthem includes powerful riffs that are 100% heavy metal certified. It’s also Marathon Approved! No song gets your blood flowing quite like this one!
2. Irene Cara, “Flashdance…What A Feeling”
It’s now mile 25 and “What A Feeling” could mean a number of things to you at this point in the race. You could be feeling like you’re a.) On the brink of death b.) Ready to give up or c.) Poised to finish it off. (most likely A or B)
This song appears at the end of the movie Flashdance during Alex’s audition routine in the final sequence. Well, consider this your final sequence. Finish off strong!
1. Pat Benatar, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”
You just crossed the finish line, so it’s time to put on “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar.
It’s the marathon runners way of saying to the 26-mile race, “You couldn’t stop me. You tried hitting me with your best shot and it just didn’t work. I win!”
