Top 10 Prom Songs Of The 1980’s

Andrew Celani - CBS Local

May is fast approaching, which means prom season is upon us.

Remember what it felt like going to the store with mom, picking out that special dress? Or getting your hair done for hours on end, making it bigger and better than ever before?

Take a stroll down memory lane and relive your prom with our list of the Top 10 Prom Songs Of The 1980’s!

10. “Nothin’ But A Good Time” by Poison

The song’s title is self explanatory and encapsulates all of what prom-goers should experience. Also, it wouldn’t be a proper 1980’s “Top 10 List” without a hair band to start it off.

9. “Keep On Loving You” by REO Speedwagon

Any good prom DJ knows that the proportion of upbeat songs to slow jams is 3:1 — except for the final half hour where it evens out to 1:1. Anyone can slow dance, and this love anthem will be sure to get even the wallflowers out on the dance floor.

8. “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley

You knew it was coming. Admit it. Is there a better song to sing to your date? I can’t think of one…

7. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard

Guys, all you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the magic once the DJ throws this record on because the girls go absolutely CRAZY to it! This is the last hair band to make the list, I promise.

6. “The Power Of Love” by Huey Lewis and The News

After appearing in the 1985 Back To The Future movie, “The Power Of Love” gave Huey Lewis and The News their first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song, paired with Marty McFly, Dr. Emmett Brown and a time-traveling DeLorean, made it a true 1980’s classic.

5. “867-5309” by Tommy Tutone

If there’s a better song than this that sums up the 1980’s as a whole, I haven’t heard it. A certified 1980’s prom classic!

4. “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer

This 1988 hit was a prom favorite for guys and gals. It’s also one of the more memorable music videos of the 1980’s. For that reason, it finds a spot on our list.

3. “White Wedding” by Billy Idol

I’ll keep this explanation short and simple. Billy Idol = 1980’s. End of story.

2. “Forever Young” by Alphaville

Prom is as as exciting as it is somber. As fun as it is to look into the future and predict where your life may take you, it’s also a sad reality when you come to grips with the fact that you may never see your classmates again.

This song is a reminder that no matter how far removed from high school you are, you’re still that same, young individual deep down inside.

1. “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

Made famous from 1987 film Dirty Dancing, hit the dance floor with your best Baby and Johnny impersonations. Just make sure your date has the muscles for that lift.

While we recognize that this Top 10 list is NOT scientific, it is no doubt entertaining and nostalgic.

How many of these songs were played at your prom? Which songs NOT on the list SHOULD be on the list? Tell us in the comments section!
