5. Etta James, “Tell Mama”
Moms are always there for us to lend a hand and make us feel better when we’re upset.
“Tell Mama” is about a son whose girlfriend has been mistreating him — but mom is there to make him feel better and offer her support. The song’s chorus reads, “Tell Mama all about it // Tell Mama what you need // Tell Mama what you want // And I’ll make everything alright.”
4. Jackson 5, “Mama’s Pearl”
We’re not contractually obligated to include Michael Jackson on all of our “Top 5” lists, but this song is just too good not to include.
3. Paul Simon, “Mother & Child Reunion”
This song is supposedly about the death of a family dog. Who would’ve thought? Well with its reggae melody and catchy lyrics, it makes for a great Mother’s Day song.
2. Carl Carlton, “She’s A Bad Mama Jama”
This 1981 hit by Carl Carlton highlights the physical aspects of women and puts emphasis on their raw beauty. On Mother’s Day, it’s important to let our moms know just how beautiful they are to us!
1. Aretha Franklin, “Respect”
Aside from cleaning up after yourself, doing your chores on time, and being nice to your sister, mothers don’t ask for much.
And while this Aretha Franklin classic isn’t about moms in particular, it serves as an anthem for women and moms everywhere who just ask for a little respect once in awhile!
Is that so much to ask?
