Van Halen could have major plans in store for the beginning of 2013. Eddie Van Halen dropped a major hint in a recent interview with USA Today that suggests the band, recently reunited with frontman David Lee Roth, could be the next Super Bowl halftime performer.

“So in November, we’ll hit Japan, and in the new year, we’ll possibly do something special, but I can’t talk about it,” Eddie said.

No follow-up to that statement came in the interview, which simply leaves the rumor twisting in the wind. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, however, speculates that EVH is hinting at a possible Super Bowl halftime performance for Van Halen.

That would make sense as “something special” that the band would do in January, seeing as there will be no major festivals or award shows taking place that month. Once we enter the New Year, no event in January/February is nearly as special as the Super Bowl. So what else could Eddie possibly be referencing?

Bringing Van Halen to the Super Bowl would return the game to the usual halftime tradition of veteran rock/pop groups with deep collections of hit songs. The 2011 halftime performers, The Black Eyed Peas, did not go over well, so it would make sense for the game to go back to the same formula that brought Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, U2, The Who, Prince, and The Rolling Stones in years past.

Now that we mention it…The Super Bowl is running out of classic rock bands to bring to the halftime show! Excluding the above bands, who else would you want to see perform at the Super Bowl halftime show? Give your suggestions in the comments.
