Duran Duran release A Diamond In The Mind, their first concert film since 2005’s Live from London, on DVD and Blu-Ray July 10. But the official premiere of the concert takes place online two days prior, and anyone with a Facebook account can see it.
The band will hold a “Digital Premiere” of the concert film on July 8 at 2:00PM (EST) via their official Facebook page, where they have 861,000+ fans. The band worked with streaming music software company Qello to create a custom Facebook app to make the premiere and its special features possible.
Founding members Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Nick Rhodes will provide exclusive audio commentary along with the premiere, and will participate in a live Q&A with fans after the show. The app will also make the DVD and Blu-Rays of the concert available for purchase, as well as $4.99 tickets for 30-day complete access to Duran Duran’s classic albums and Qello’s deep catalog of HD concert films & documentaries.
Fans can even get a special sneak preview of the concert if they share the event on Facebook. Clearly, Duran Duran aims to make their latest concert film a completely social experience.
It will be interesting to see how well the band’s “freemium” business model works for A Diamond In The Mind, and how many fans simply stream the concert live versus how many purchase the all-access Qello pass or the DVD.
