A number of bands have name-checked The Doors as a musical influence through the years, but now an unlikely group of music stars will honor the Los Angeles rockers at the city’s Sunset Strip Music Festival.

Organizers announced yesterday (June 13) that the outdoor street fest will feature shock-rocker Marilyn Manson as the headliner, as well as old-school hip-hop trio De La Soul, So-Cal punk rockers the Offspring and Bad Religion, house musician Steve Aoki, pop act Far East Movement, Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society, alt-hip-hop group Das Racist and more.

Performers will give their own renditions of Doors’ classics at the fifth annual musical block party, to be held Aug. 16-18 on the Sunset Strip.

Acts like Guns N’ Roses and other ’80s/’90s hair metal acts may be most associated with the Sunset Strip music scene, but The Doors were one of the original Sunset Strip bands.

They started out playing shows at small clubs on the Strip before graduating to the Whisky A Go Go, where they served as the house band before signing to Elektra Records in 1966. (They were eventually fired from the Whisky, supposedly because of Jim Morrison’s spoken word ramblings on the Oedipus Complex in The Doors’ song “The End.”)

As Doors guitarist Robby Krieger phrased it in a statement: “Venice was our home, but The Doors lived and came of age on the Sunset Strip.”

“The Sunset Strip in the ’60s was the incubation canal for an entire renaissance in music, and its impact is still with us,” Doors drummer John Densmore added in a statement. “The Doors are proud to be honored this year at the 5th annual SSMF celebration.”

Ticket sales will partially benefit the Impact Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center in Pasadena, Calif.
